5th Lt Emi Merry Memorial Trophy kicks off

Wokha, February 11 (MExN): The 5th Lt Emi Merry (IAS) memorial women football and volleyball championship 2020 organised by Wokha District Women Sports Association (WDWSA) began today at local football ground, Wokha.

Vilone Sakhrie, while speaking at the programme after unfurling the flag said, that organising a women’s tournament is his long dream, and lauded the WDWSA for organizing the event. In the meantime, he called upon all to work towards organising a statewide women’s tournament which will accommodate all women of the districts in the state. 

He also said, in early days women were not allowed to play because all games were dominated by the male but now a time has changed. 

The tournament prizes this year for football has been sponsored by the Department of Women Resource Development.

Altogether 22 teams consisting of 8 football and 14 volleyball teams including a team from Tuensang district are vying for the championship.

In today's first match defending champion Suren women SC tied their match with Women SC Koio 1-1.

Meanwhile, in the volleyball matches, Tsumang and Rising Star Forest colony registered wins.
