New Delhi, March 11 (MExN): The Ministry of Home Affairs today informed the Rajya Sabha that a total of 802 people are kept in detention centres in Assam as on March 6 this year.
“As on 06/03/2020, 802 persons have been kept in detention centres in Assam” Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai informed the Rajya Sabha said in a written reply to a question posed by Sukhram Singh Yadav, a member from Uttar Pradesh.
He further informed that the “hard-copies of the supplementary list of inclusion and on-line family-wise list of exclusions was published on 31st August, 2019 as per the directions” of the Supreme Court.
“A total of 3,11,21,004 persons were found eligible for inclusion in the final NRC, leaving out 19,06,657 persons,” he added.
Meanwhile, regarding the details on whether the government is considering to implement NRC in other states, apart from Assam, Rai replied in negative.
“Till now, Government has not taken any decision to prepare National Register of Indian Citizenship (NRIC) at the National level,” he stated.
On details of the documents which Government considers to be legally valid for proving one's citizenship, the MoS said that it can be acquired by “birth or descent or registration or naturalisation or incorporation of territory.”
“Acquisition of Indian Citizenship is governed by the provisions of The Citizenship Act, 1955 and rules made thereunder,” he added.
