Mokokchung, March 28 (MExN): The anti-illegal immigrant campaign spearheaded by the powerful Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) for this year commenced today with the students’ body renewing the registration cards of the non-local resident and conducted fresh registration of the newly arrived migrants in the town.
A considerable number of the migrants flocked at the AKM Office here today where the registration works were carried out. AKM officials disclosed that the registration will be conducted till the month of April and it might even be extended if need be. They disclosed that the whole district will be covered during the whole year.
This is the first activity of the newly inducted AKM officials who were nominated on January, 2011 during the AKM General Conference at Ungma village and took charge on early March, 2011.
The anti-illegal migrant campaign spearheaded by the AKM was first launched in the year 2007 under the presidentship of Aodangnok Ozukum. The campaign was then called as ‘Survival 2007’. Hundreds of illegal immigrants, who were settling in the town running business and dominating the market economy, were identified and were asked to leave the town. Before 2007 Mokokchung was infested by illegal Bangladeshi immigrants whose number was increasing in the town by each passing year. However, under the advice and help of concerned citizens, intellectuals of the town, the AKM despite much difficulty successfully carried out the campaign. In the year 2008, a new team of AKM officials was elected led by President S Bendang Aier. Survival 2007 was changed to ‘Survival Mokokchung’ and migrants and illegal-migrants without proper documents and identification were thoroughly scrutinized and the defaulters were asked to leave the town. However, genuine Indians like marwaris from mainland India having proper documents have been left untouched and they are successfully continuing with their businesses in the town.
The most interesting aspect of this anti illegal-migrant campaign can be the employment opportunity to the hundreds of educated unemployed youths of the town in the business sector. During the past five year, many young local entrepreneurs have established their own businesses and some are doing their business quite successfully.
“Though the people may not fully understand the intentions of the AKM at this juncture, but one day, this work will bear fruit and the future generation will be happy with the AKM,” maintained the newly elected AKM president, Akok Longkumer. He took charge as the new president from his predecessor, S Bendang Aier. Besides, other activities, this anti-illegal migrant campaign is also considered one of the most important activities of the AKM, keeping the influx of illegal Bangladeshi migrants into the town.
