AKM flags poor infrastructure, teacher shortage in Langpangkong range schools

MOKOKCHUNG, MAY 28 (MExN): The Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) has raised serious concerns over the acute shortage of teachers and inadequate educational infrastructure in government schools under the Langpangkong range, following the fourth phase of inspection and visitation.

The inspection, conducted under the jurisdiction of the Sub-Divisional Education Officer (SDEO), Changtongya, began on May 19 and concluded on May 23. A total of 21 schools were visited during this phase.

According to a press statement issued by AKM, the schools were found to be critically understaffed, with many teachers transferred without replacements. Inadequate classrooms were also cited as a major challenge, affecting both teaching and learning processes.

In one such case, GPS Luyimlenden (Kangtsungyimsen) has only two teachers managing six classrooms since 2015. Despite repeated appeals from the School Management and Development Committee (SMDC) and the Village Council, the Education Department has not responded to the demand for new teacher appointments. The shortage has often led to the cancellation of classes, especially when teachers are away for training, forcing many students to discontinue their education.

Similarly, GHS Kangtsung has had no mathematics teacher since 2021 and no Hindi teacher since 2023. GMS Tuli-A has been functioning without an English teacher since 2023. GPS Aopenzu has only three teachers since 2022 and is operating with just three classrooms since its establishment.

AKM also expressed concern over the absence of replacements for retired teachers in nearly all the schools inspected. It has appealed to the concerned authorities for immediate intervention to ensure proper teacher deployment and improved classroom facilities in rural schools.

The student body further stressed the need for a comprehensive inspection of all schools under the SDEO Changtongya jurisdiction to assess the extent of the crisis and take corrective measures. A detailed report will be released upon completion of inspections in the remaining schools, it stated.
