AR personnel held with WY tablets worth crores in Manipur

In what could be a heavy blow to the image of Assam Rifles manning NH-102 (Imphal-Moreh road), a personnel of the Assam Rifles has been arrested with a huge quantity of contraband ‘World is Yours’ (WY) tablets worth crores of rupees in international market.


Manipur Police commandos attached with the Thoubal district police arrested the Assam Rifles personnel identified as Yengkhom Bikram Singh (35), a resident of Kakching Moirangthem Leikai of Kakching district yesterday (Thursday) night, around 8.30 pm. He is a personnel of 6th Assam Rifles.


A police source said that the contraband drug was recovered by the police commando team during its random checking of vehicles along the highway at Wangjing Bazar  The contraband drug was found carrying in an airbag in the car (Maruti Swift Dzire). 


During the checking of the airbag, the police personnel detected 2,30,000 pieces of WY tablets in 23 packets.


The seized drug would worth around Rs 11.50 crore in the international market even though its value in the local market is estimated at Rs 1.15 crore, the police source said.


Police suspected the contraband drug was being transported from Moreh, the border town of Manipur at the Indo-Myanmar border through NH-102.


After registering a case, Thoubal police has initiated an investigation, the source further said.


 The arrest of the Assam Rifles personnel came at a time when the state government is pressing the Union ministry of Home Affairs for replacement of Assam Rifles from manning the national highways.
