Assam Rifles Half Marathon 2024 held in Shillong

MEGHALAYA, NOVEMBER 24 (MExN): The Assam Rifles successfully organized the 4th edition of the “Assam Rifles Half Marathon 2024” on November 24 at the Headquarters of the Directorate General Assam Rifles in Laitkor, Shillong, aimed at promoting the “Fit India Movement.”

This year’s event attracted over 1900 participants from across 28 states and 3 Union Territories, representing a wide array of age groups and genders. Legendary international boxer MC Mary Kom, former Member of Rajya Sabha, served as the event’s brand ambassador and participated in the 10 km run.

The marathon was set against the scenic backdrop of the majestic hills of East Khasi District in Laitkor and was graced by several dignitaries from the government, armed forces, and volunteers from across the country. Participants competed in three categories: the 21 km “Cloud Chase,” the 10 km “Pine Path,” and the 5 km “Crystal Stream.”

A total of 347 runners competed in the 21 km event, 826 in the 10 km race, and 776 in the 5 km race. Medals, certificates, and T-shirts were awarded to all participants as tokens of appreciation, while cash prizes totaling Rs 18.15 lakhs were given to 48 winners across various categories. In addition, 150 consolation prizes were also awarded.

In the overall category, Kailash Chaudhary from 20 Assam Rifles won the 21 km race with a time of 01:05:30 hours, while Anjali Kumari from Bihar claimed the female category in 01:19:43 hours.

Air Marshal Surat Singh, AVSM, VM, VSM, AOC-in-C Eastern Air Command, graced the event as the chief guest. He commended the enthusiasm and spirit of the participants and spectators and presented prizes to the winners of the 21 km and 10 km categories.

Notably, this year’s marathon was promoted as the first “Green Marathon” in the Northeast, with zero plastic usage and an emphasis on waste recycling. Assam Rifles extended gratitude to the event sponsors, including SBI Bank, ICICI Bank, YES Bank, IDFC First Bank, Punjab & Sindh Bank, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd, TATA Advanced Systems, and event organizer lamSports, for their support in ensuring the smooth conduct of the event.
