Assam Rifles Naga youth Mount Saramati expedition flags off

DIMAPUR, DECEMBER 10 (MexN): The flagging  off ceremony of the joint Assam Rifles  Naga Youth Mount Saramati expedition undertaken by 5 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of IGAR(N) , DGAR and HQ 3 Corps was held at   Chieswema today.  The highlight of the Flagging off was a grand Ceremony   in  which the expedition was flagged  off  by  the  chief guest, Maj Gen BS Das, SM, Inspector General Assam Rifles (North), stated a press note issued by PRO IGAR North.  
Mount Saramati is the highest mountain on the water shed of Patkai Range which acts as the International boundary between India and Myanmar. Mount Saramati stands 3837 meters tall next to Border Pillar 138 on the IB. Mount Saramati literally means “Mother of Spirits”.
The first expedition to Mount Saramati was conducted under the leadership of Major TK Tshering of 15 Assam Rifles in Dec 1982. Assam Rifles personnel and the youth of Nagaland took part in that expedition. After exactly 30 years we are proud to launch the adventure activity to Saramati peak again with Assam Rifles and Naga youth.
In Dec 2005, the erstwhile Nagaland Range (S) was christened as 5 Sector Assam Rifles. In order to commemorate the occasion of its christening and to celebrate the spirit of adventure of the first expedition, 5 Sector Assam Rifles is bringing together Assam Rifles  personnel and Naga Youth to undertake an expedition. Students from various schools/colleges under 5 Sector Assam Rifles are participating in the joint expedition to Mount Saramati with AR personnel. This is the second expedition to Mount Saramati after almost three decades.
  The expedition  is being led by Maj Ajay Balakrishnan of 32 Assam Rifles who is the team leader and comprises of 45 personnel out of which there are  18 Naga  boys and 11 girls. The Naga youth, predominantly   school going children, are volunteers from various districts of Nagaland.   The students are from schools and colleges such as Sacred Heart School, Chizami, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya ,  Jalukie,  Mount View School, Suruhato, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Wokha , Eastern Christian College, Dimapur and  Patkai Christian College, Dimapur.
A base camp will be established near Thanamir with the assistance of 7 Assam Rifles. The Expedition will summit  Mount Saramati on 14 Dec 2011.  The event is also a gesture and a mark of eternal friendship between Assam Rifles and Naga Youth. The event will also foster a spirit of discipline, camaraderie and adventure amongst the school children of Nagaland.   
The flagging off was attended by a huge gathering which included GBs, parents of participating Naga Youth,  teachers and Assam Rifles officers. The Chief guest,  while interacting, emphasised on the importance of adventure in building up the psyche and self confidence  of  the  youth of  Nagaland  and  complemented Brigadier R Ravi ,  Commander   5 Sector Assam Rifles  for undertaking such histroic activity and encouraging the spirit of adventure amongst Assam Rifles and youth of Nagaland. He also wished the team happy summitting.
