Aizawl | May 20 : After the Mizoram journalists association, it is the turn now for Mizoram Bar Association (MBA), Mizoram College Teachers Association (MCTA) and Zoram Taxi Owners Association (ZTOA) who expressed their views of lifting the liquor prohibition act from Mizoram. The three associations in their reply to the Study Group of MLTP have said that the Act is not a fruitful one and it should be lifted. In fact, the largest NGO in Mizoram, Young Mizo Association (YMA) had already aired its opinion to the Study Group of MLTP to lift the Act and made liquor free state.
The bar association highlighted th failure of the Act and suggested liquor should be made free in the state. College teachers association has the same opinion. While, taxi owners association sharing the same notion said the state government should review the Act.
On the other hand, Mizo Academy of Letters (MAL), the highest literature body unlike other NGOs expressed its satisfaction in the implementation of the Act. It said the Act should still be enforced across the state with a slight change. . Till today, Mizoram Upa Pawl (MUP), elderly association and Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP), women organisation have not given their opinions to the Study Group of MLTP
After the Mizoram Liquor Total Prohibition Act was passed in the year 1997, the state government had prohibited sale, possession and consumption of any kind of liquor in the state. But still one may see drunkards roaming around the streets of Aizawl or other villages every evening.
Given the situation, the state government had formed a Mizoram Study Group of MLTP Act to see the failures and success of cthe Act. The study group had asked the opinions of various organisations in connection with the implementation of MLTP Act. The feedbacks will be submitted to the state government for further measures.
