Kohima, June 26 (MExN): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Nagaland on Friday observed the “Black Days of Emergency” at the State BJP Headquarters, Kohima, commemorating the period of National Emergency imposed in India from June 25, 1975 to March 21, 1977.
Addressing the gathering, Thomas Magh, State President, ST Morcha, stated that while emergency provisions exist within a democratic framework, they must always serve the larger interests of society and should never be used in a manner that curtails the rights and daily lives of citizens.
Explaining the significance of observing the “Black Days of Emergency,” he recalled that the Emergency declared during the tenure of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi remains one of the most debated periods in India’s democratic history. He stated that the proclamation of Emergency led to restrictions on civil liberties, concentration of power, and suppression of democratic institutions.
He further remarked that the observance serves as an opportunity to reflect on the importance of protecting democratic values, constitutional principles, and ensuring that governance remains people-centric. Referring to historical events surrounding the period, he said that instead of addressing prevailing national concerns such as unemployment, inflation, food shortages, and social issues, extraordinary measures were adopted.
Magh stated that remembering this period is important so that future generations remain vigilant and committed to preserving democratic institutions, freedom of expression, and constitutional governance. He emphasized that public office should never be used for personal or political gain but should uphold the spirit and values enshrined in the Constitution of India.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Vizhalie Sanchu, Secretary, Kohima District while welcome address was delivered by O Atila Phom, State Vice President and Convenor of the “Black Days of Emergency” programme.
Shilukaba Longchar, State Secretary gave concluding remark.
