The Border Security Force (BSF) has had a busy week with seizures amounting to over Rs. 3.2 crore being made, according to a BSF source.
During the last one week, BSF personnel have seized 835 cattle, 26,500 kgs of onion and apprehended drug smugglers along with huge quantity of Yaba tablets and marijuana.
All these items were seized in areas close to the international border between Meghalaya and Bangladesh.
During the week, the BSF has also apprehended 33 miscreants involved in trans border crimes, the BSF source also said.
This seizure is a result of increased vigil maintained by the BSF especially in East Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills where there has been increased activity in cattle smuggling, the BSF source added.
“Cattle smuggling is the root cause of all other trans border crimes but despite continuous effort of BSF to prevent the illegal cattle trade, it is a big challenge to completely halt the cattle smuggling from India into Bangladesh,” a BSF official said in Shillong on Monday.
In this regard, the BSF has also expressed concern after noting that a good number of trucks loaded with cattle are making their way into Meghalaya from Asam on a daily basis in a bid to reach Bangladesh.
