Mon, March 5 (MExN): The Annual Sports Meet 2026 of the Don Bosco Higher Secondary School (DBHSS), Mon, has on Thursday commenced at the school ground in a ceremony marked by enthusiasm and participation from students, staff and guests.
The three-day event is being organised under the theme “Unity in Strength, Victory in Unity,” highlighting the importance of teamwork, cooperation and sportsmanship in the holistic development of students.
District Education Officer (DEO) Mon, Thinoneisie Lhousa, attended the inaugural programme as the chief guest and was accorded a reception by members of the Bharat Scouts and Guides.
In his welcome address, the principal of the school, Rev Fr Elow Lawrence SDB, greeted the chief guest and other dignitaries and encouraged students to participate in the sporting events with enthusiasm, discipline and a spirit of fair play.
Among those present at the programme were L Yajao Konyak, president of the All Nagaland Private Schools Association (ANPSA), Mon unit; Monao Wangshu, chairman of Thammong village; members of the school board managing committee; Sr Ancy, superior of Sacred Heart Convent; along with educators, community leaders, parents and invited guests.
The inaugural ceremony included the ceremonial hoisting of the flag and lighting of the Olympic torch, followed by the oath-taking ceremony administered by Scout Master Sir John, in which participants pledged to uphold the values of fairness, discipline and sportsmanship throughout the competitions.
Addressing the gathering, Lhousa highlighted the importance of sports and games in the overall development of students. While academic learning forms the intellectual foundation of education, he said sports and physical activities help in building a healthy body, a sharp mind and strong character.
He encouraged students to balance academics with extracurricular activities, noting that participation in sports nurtures values such as discipline, teamwork, resilience and leadership.
Lhousa also reminded the students that competition is a natural part of life and that both victory and defeat offer valuable lessons. He urged them to compete in the true spirit of sportsmanship by respecting rules, officials and fellow competitors.
He further appreciated Don Bosco Higher Secondary School for its contribution to promoting quality education and supporting government initiatives in Mon district, and commended the institution for its role in community development and educational progress in the area.
The programme also featured cultural presentations, including a musical performance titled “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Gabriel of Class VI, followed by a drill display by primary and high school students showcasing discipline and coordination.
The event concluded with the release of colourful balloons by Rev Fr T J Francis SDB, director of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Mon, who also serves as director of Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Tizit, symbolising hope, unity and the spirit of healthy competition.
The chief guest later declared the Annual Sports Meet 2026 open, marking the beginning of a series of athletic events to be held over the next three days.
