To reinforce work discipline among government employees, Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton conducted a series of surprise inspections across various government departments in Wokha on May 29.

The visit was part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to uphold its ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy.

The inspection drive commenced at the Civil Hospital Wokha, where the Deputy CM scrutinised attendance registers and interacted with staff to gain first-hand insight into their grievances. Of the 14 doctors posted at the hospital, one was found absent without official leave. Patton promptly ordered that the absentee’s salary be deducted for the day and instructed that the names of all employees absent without approved leave be submitted to the Deputy Commissioner for further explanation.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the Deputy Chief Minister cross-verified office rosters, physically confirming the presence of staff marked present. Employees listed as present but found missing from their posts were also marked absent and subject to salary deductions.

Subsequently, Patton visited the Public Works Department (PWD) office in Wokha, where several staff members were similarly found absent without prior notice. Directives were immediately issued for deductions in their salaries as well. Expressing concern over the deteriorating condition of the PWD office building, Patton instructed Executive Engineer Mhathung Kikon to submit a proposal for urgent renovation works.

Reiterating the importance of punctuality and regular attendance, Patton warned that such unannounced inspections would continue across all departments. “All employees must attend office without fail. Leave applications must be duly submitted and verified. Those on official training must produce valid training orders,” he asserted.

Addressing the broader issue of absenteeism at the state level, Patton noted that out of approximately 2,700 staff at the Nagaland Secretariat, only around 800 were attending office regularly. However, recent surprise inspections had led to a marked improvement, with attendance figures now exceeding 1,000.

During his visit, the Deputy Chief Minister also inspected the Multi-Sports Complex at Mount Tiyi College following requests from college authorities for immediate repairs. The facility was found to be in a dilapidated and unusable condition. Patton assured that renovation work would be undertaken using the Common Pool Fund and urged faculty members to maintain regular attendance. As the only government college in Wokha district, he stressed the critical importance of staff dedication, warning that absent teachers would face salary cuts.

The college authorities expressed their gratitude to the Deputy Chief Minister for his continued support and appealed for ongoing cooperation in addressing infrastructural and administrative concerns.
