Dimapur, November 4 (MExN): The newly announced Government of Naga National Council Democratic Socialist Republic of Nagaland (GNNC/DSRN) has expressed concern and disappointment over what it termed the recent declaration by the Naga Tribe Hohos (NTHs) and the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR) stating that “the formation of new Naga political factions will not be accepted.”
According to the GNNC/DSRN, while it recognises and respects the intent of reconciliation and unity, the October 19 FNR-NTHs’ statement raises critical questions regarding its timing, motive, and consistency with the historical and political realities of the Naga movement.
Among others, it questioned why FNR and the Tribe Hohos remained silent for years during what it deemed the dilution and erosion of the Naga cause and the spirit of nationalism under internal corruption, and when leadership within existing Naga Political Groups (NPGs) “drifted away from the founding vision.”
As per the GNNC/DSRN, raising objections only now without prior intervention is neither timely nor justifiable.
It further questioned whether the FNR is truly standing for the cause of the Nagas, or has become a convenient instrument “serving the interest of the Indian government and status-quo forces that seek to domesticate the Naga political aspiration.”
Conveying its “unwavering commitment” to the cause of Naga sovereignty, the GNNC/DSRN asked the NTHs and FNR to clarify their stance on the issue.
The new entity also contended that the right to form political or revolutionary organisations “cannot be dictated by any Hoho or forum,” adding that to declare new initiatives “unacceptable” is to suppress the natural evolution of political conscience among the people.
Moreover, the assertion that “no other forum or body may supersede the authority of Tribe Hoho” contradicts the inclusive spirit of Naga polity, it held. It further asserted that “Tribe Hohos are cultural and social custodians, not political sovereigns,” and their authority cannot “override the collective will of the people or restrain genuine political initiatives emerging from grassroots dissatisfaction and moral necessity.”
The GNNC/DSRN stated that the attempt to impose a blanket prohibition on political reorganisation risks freezing the movement into stagnation and fostering dependency, and affirmed that every Naga has the right to “participate in shaping the nation’s destiny.”
Further stating that it stands for accountability, transparency, and renewal within the Naga political movement, it called upon the FNR and Tribe Hohos to “introspect sincerely, to engage with emerging voices rather than suppress them.”
Meanwhile, the GNNC/DSRN appreciated Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio for visiting New Delhi to deliberate on the long-pending Naga political issue.
According to the group, during discussions, he stressed that a solution must be provided to the Nagas, to which the Government of India reportedly responded that unity among the Nagas is a precondition, cautioning that disunity could lead to unrest.
To this end, the GNNC/DSRN said it is essential for the Indian government to clearly define the nature and framework of the proposed solution so that the Nagas may move forward with a shared vision and understanding.
