Guwahati, May 21 (MExN): Defending Champions, Manipur Working Journalist Association (MWJA) defeated Dimapur Press Club in the finals of the Table Tennis Championship at the ongoing 3rd Airtel Northeast Media Sports Festival here and retained the trophy for the second consecutive year.
Last year’s runners-up Dimapur Press Club sailed to the finals defeating Protidin group in the quarter-finals and then Assam Tribune in the semis. The tournament favourites, DPC and MWJA were tipped to be the finalists as the tournament began in the morning, with the paddlers from the various media organizations keeping an eye on these two teams.
In the finals, the Manipur team represented by Ibobi and Michael defeated DPC’s Asungba Jamir and Dilip Sharma by a margin of 21-18. In the Open category, Ranadeep Kakoti of Janbhoomi defeated Tauhid Ali Talukdar in the finals 11-3, 11-9 to lift the singles title. In women’s singles, Sonia Devi of MWJA defeated Rima Borthakur of Assam 11-5, 8-11, 11-7 to lift the women’s singles title.
