KOHIMA, MAY 31 (MExN): The Angami Students' Union (ASU) has expressed deep concern over increasing reports of drug peddling activities and incidents of student abductions in and around educational institutions in the state. In a public advisory issued on Friday, the Union called for heightened vigilance from students, parents, educational institutions, and the general public.
Citing recent developments, the ASU stated that inputs indicate a growing network of drug peddlers attempting to infiltrate school and college environments with the intent to lure young students. Additionally, the emergence of abduction cases involving students has raised alarm over the safety and well-being of the youth.
As part of the advisory, the ASU issued the following appeals and cautions to various stakeholders:
To the students, the Union urged students to exercise utmost caution and refrain from interacting with unknown individuals. It further advised them to report any suspicious activity immediately to school authorities, parents or the nearest police station.
Parents and guardians were advised to remain alert about their children’s whereabouts, peer groups, and any behavioural changes. The Union encouraged maintaining open lines of communication and offering necessary guidance on the dangers of drug abuse and abduction.
Educational institutions have been urged to enhance campus security, implement strict surveillance measures, and organise regular sensitization programmes on the risks and consequences of drug abuse and abduction. Schools and colleges have also been asked to report any suspicious movements or individuals to law enforcement authorities without delay.
The ASU called upon all citizens to stay vigilant and actively contribute to community safety by promptly reporting any unlawful or suspicious activity to the authorities.
The Union also issued a stern warning to individuals or groups involved in activities that endanger students, stating that it would not hesitate to expose and take firm action against the perpetrators in accordance with both community and legal mechanisms.
“This advisory is issued in the interest of public awareness and student protection,” the ASU stated, adding, “We earnestly urge all stakeholders to stand in solidarity against these threats and uphold the safety and aspirations of our people.”
