Earth Day open letter to MLAs of Nagaland

Honorable Member of the House.
Greetings to you all on this ‘Earth Day’ as the world celebrates it for the 41st time since Gaylord Nelson, a United States Senator, founded the first Earth Day in April 22nd 1970 in an attempt to bring about a better understanding of the affect we have on our planet, and calling us to take action to make positive environmental changes in our community. You all are aware that Earth Day is becoming one of the most important hallmarks in the world of environmental conservation, sustainable use of natural resources, energy efficiency, recycling and reusing, and reducing carbon footprints on the environment.
Taking this special occasion, we would like to place before you the following ‘charter of appeals’ with hope and believe that you will take positive action thereof for the benefit of the present as well as the future generation. We therefore make this earnest appeal to our elected leaders to;
•    Take urgent and coordinated action to combat the negative impacts of soaring food prices as there are indications that global food prices will remain high in the years to come due to climate related problems.
•    Strengthen policies and institutional structures that enhance the adoption of improved technologies and promote the sustainable and equitable use water, land and natural resources.
•    To take adequate measures in combating rapid growth of population, especially immigration, as it poses a threat towards sustainability of the environment and the indigenous people in the long run.
•    To safeguard and conserve the heritage of our wildlife and its habitat, which are gravely imperiled by a combination of adverse human actions.
•    To ensure that the non-renewable resources are employed in such a way as to guard against the danger of their future exhaustion and to ensure that benefits from such employment are shared by all.
•    To take all possible steps to prevent air, water and soil pollution through human actions.
•    To give priority towards Environmental Education to the younger generation as well as the adults, in order to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in protecting and improving the environment in its full human dimension.
•    To accord special attention towards conservation of biodiversity and its sustainable use, and to ensure fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.
•    To recognize the crucial role of reducing emission from deforestation and forest degradation and pursue sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.
•     To ensure that Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) are obtained prior to the approval of any developmental project affecting the Indigenous Peoples lands and  resources, particularly in  connection with  the development, utilization or exploitation of mineral, water or other economic resources.
•    To ensure that proper Environmental Impact Assessment be carried out in all suitable developmental projects, and full disclosures of the intent and scope of the activity be debated and heard by all stakeholders before any license or permits be issued. And to maintain strict “Polluters Pay Principle”.
•    To enact strong Forests Acts so as to prevent possible encroachment, deforestation, illegal logging and destruction of forests biodiversity through forests fires.
Thanking You!
