Mokokchung, September 19 (MExN): The Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Union Mokokchung (ENPUM), Nagaland, has cautioned against the creation and circulation of memes, photographs, videos and other manipulated or objectionable content targeting members and leaders of the Eastern Nagaland community.
In a joint statement issued by Y Among, President, and Selepe, Executive Secretary, ENPUM said it had received reports regarding the creation, editing, posting, sharing, forwarding and circulation of such content.
The union urged individuals, students, educational institutions, social media group members, WhatsApp group administrators and moderators, and institutional group administrators to refrain from creating, encouraging, posting, sharing or circulating content intended to insult, harass, defame, humiliate, threaten or damage the dignity and reputation of any person.
Furthermore, ENPUM cautioned that any complaint or report concerning such activities from educational institutions in Mokokchung or groups targeting leaders or individuals may be documented and referred to the appropriate law-enforcement and Cyber Crime authorities for necessary action under applicable laws.
It also called on social media, WhatsApp and institutional groups to exercise due care, stating that administrators, moderators and other concerned persons may be held accountable, where applicable, for content circulated through such groups and may face legal proceedings before the competent court.
The union urged everyone to exercise responsibility and caution before creating, posting, sharing or forwarding objectionable content.
“What may appear to be a joke or meme can have serious legal consequences when it harms another person’s dignity or reputation,” it stated.
ENPUM called for responsible use of social media and urged the community to uphold respect, dignity, peace and harmony.
