Explosion in Manipur PWD office

Imphal | December 14: Three persons, including a woman, have been injured in a powerful bomb explosion that took place at the Public Works Department (PWD) office building in Manipur’s capital Imphal, today around afternoon.   
Additional Deputy General of Police V Jathang told the Media that the explosion was from a very powerful timer device placed in a waste bin.  “As of now, we don’t have any suspects responsible for the blast but investigation is underway to ascertain who was behind the act”, the police officer said when asked on the identity of the suspects.
The explosion took place at around 1:30 pm inside a room on the second floor of the PWD building which houses the rooms of the assistant engineers of Thoubal, Ukhrul and Churanchandpur districts. The victims, including a woman, are all staffers of the department. The injured were rushed to RIMS hospital and Raj Polyclinic private hospital here. One of them is stated to be in critical condition.
The injured have been indentified as Haorungbam Nirmala of Sagolband Sayang, Y Yaima from Khongman in Imphal east and Md Manal from Lilong Leihaokhong, Thoubal district. The walls and ceiling of the office room, including the window glass panes of the first floor and second floor were damaged.
Sources said the blast occurred in a high-security zone manned by a company of the Central reserve Police Force, three personnel of the Crime Investigation Department and eight Home Guards personnel.
State police and central paramilitary forces rushed to the site and cordoned off the area minutes after the blast and conducted a massive search operation inside the PWD complex. There is no report of any arrests made in connection with the incident. Works Minister K Ranjit and DGP Y Joykumar of Imphal West DIG also visited the site of the explosion.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. About two weeks earlier, a powerful bomb exploded right in front of the main gate of the venue of Sangai Festival 2011 in Imphal on November 30 leaving one dead and four injured.
