Maligaon, December 15 (MExN): Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved a significant milestone by handling the first-ever direct inward automobile rake at Sairang Railway Station in Mizoram.
A total of 119 Maruti cars, transported from Changsari near Guwahati, were delivered by rail, marking a historic step in strengthening logistics connectivity to the state, a press release said.
This landmark operation by NFR will enhance goods and vehicle transportation availability in Mizoram, reduce long-distance road dependence, and provide tangible benefits to automobile dealers, service providers and consumers, thereby supporting regional economic growth.
The successful movement of automobiles underscores the strategic importance of the 51.38 km Bairabi–Sairang new railway line, a challenging engineering achievement executed through difficult terrain and 45 tunnels under NFR’s jurisdiction.
The line was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, fully integrating Mizoram into the national rail network. NFR has since ensured robust passenger services, with the Rajdhani Express, Mizoram Express and Sairang–Kolkata Express recording very high occupancy levels, reflecting public confidence in the connectivity.
NFR has also rapidly expanded freight and parcel operations on the Bairabi–Sairang section, transporting essential commodities such as cement, construction materials, automobiles, sand and stone chips. The first freight movement on September 14, 2025, carried 21 cement wagons from Assam to Aizawl.
Additionally, the first parcel services, including the movement of Anthurium flowers to Delhi on September 19, 2025, have opened new market avenues for local producers.
With 17 rakes handled between September and December 2025, NFR continues to play a pivotal role in transforming Mizoram into a reliable logistics and mobility hub, reaffirming its commitment towards inclusive development and regional integration, the officials said.
