Former wrestler champ under scanner in assault case

Dimapur, October 21 (MExN): Phek civil society is outraged at an alleged assault of a woman by her fiancé, who is said to be a former Naga wrestling champion, on October 17 in Pfutsero town. The man belonging to Phek village is accused of assaulting a woman, of Leshemi village, with whom he was said to be engaged.
Pfutsero Town Mothers’ Association, Leshemi Youth Organization of Pfutsero town and Leshemi Sub-Society issued separate press statements today expressing shock that the man would assault his own fiancée in public. According to the organizations, the former Naga wrestler allegedly assaulted his fiancée girl in a public place and ‘insulting the modesty and dignity of women in general.’
The Pfutsero Town Mothers’ Association denounced the alleged act and said women are no longer safe in own society. The press note was issued by Mrs Kereweu Pradiah President and Mrs Kotele Mero Secretary. “Many of the women continued to suffer humiliations and harassment at the hands of unscrupulous men who are supposed to protect their sisters and specially the weaker sex. It is unfortunate that such acts of violence against women is happening time and again when the whole world is focused on the eliminations of Violence against women in the present day society,” a message form the association said.  
The organization also urged all right-thinking citizens and the authorities to render all co-operation and support ‘towards our fight against violence against women.’
The Leshemi Sub-Society Pfutsero Town (LSSPT) and the Leshemi Youth Organization of Pfutsero Town (LYOPT) have also condemned the alleged act of the said Soho, ‘a former open Naga wrestling champion for the inhuman atrocity meted out on a girl belonging to Leshemi Village with whom he was engaged.’
A joint press release from the two organizations stated – “The incident occurred on 17th Oct.2011, in which the victim was physically assaulted in broad daylight in the heart of Pfutsero town and thus disturbing the peace and tranquility of the town. At the same time, one person who belongs to the same village of the girl came across the incident and inquired about their conflict but then he was also charged and physically assaulted by the accused, who claims that ‘she is his wife and he can do anything,’ though they are yet to be married.”

President, LYOPT termed the act of the accused person as “shameful and inhuman” and pointed out that this was an insult to the Leshemi community and the town in general. The two organizations urged the public to condemn the
‘inhuman act.’
