The Zunheboto Town Council (ZTC), in collaboration with the District Medical Department, organised a free medical camp at the Zunheboto Town Council office on February 20.

Delivering the keynote address, K Herato Sukhalu, Chairperson of Zunheboto Town Council, emphasised that health is one of the most important aspects of life, adding that neglecting one’s health can lead to serious complications.

At the same time, Sukhalu highlighted that the rate of diabetes in India is alarmingly high and stressed the need for taking precautions, especially after reaching the age of 50 to 60 years. He further emphasised the importance of maintaining a proper diet and noted that conducting such awareness programme is essential.

Dr Akaho Sema, Senior Medical Officer at Hezukhu Memorial District Hospital, in his address, stated that this was the first engagement programme with ZTC and expressed hope that such initiatives would continue in the future.

He informed that the medical team was present to diagnose and provide free treatment and medicines for diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis (TB), HIV, and other non-communicable diseases. He assured that the department would utilise all available resources to provide the best possible services.

Dr Sema also acknowledged ZTC for its proper waste management system, particularly in the transportation and disposal of hospital waste. He mentioned that in 2024, the hospital was recognised and awarded the Kayakalp Award an award presented by the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to recognize health centers that promote cleanliness, hygiene, and infection control as an extension of the Swachh Bharat Mission in India to district hospitals for best maintenance and hygiene promotion among districts, receiving a cash prize of Rs 20 lakhs.

Furthermore, he remarked that environmental conditions are changing and pollution levels are increasing due to improper waste management. He emphasised that diseases often arise from polluted surroundings and poor sanitation, which also affect mental health. Cleanliness and personal hygiene, he noted, are essential components of a healthy life.

Earlier in the programme, Hekuto Jimo, Councillor and Advisor of Zunheboto Town Council, chaired the event. The invocation was pronounced by Hilotoli Awomi, Assistant Pastor of Sumi Baptist Church, Zunheboto. The programme concluded with a free medical check-up for ZTC members, office staff, and the public.
