ICAR Nagaland Centre promotes scientific pig farming

Longleng, November 13 (MExN): ICAR Nagaland Centre organised one-day training on scientific pig farming cum input distribution programme on November 9 at Longleng district in collaboration with KVK Longleng. The training was imparted on scientific pig farming with improved pig germplasm, stated a press release.

Dr Mahak, Scientist ICAR Nagaland Centre exhorted the tribal farmers to take up the challenge and make Nagaland self sufficient in pork production. He said that Naga society has to come out with their own solution for fulfilling their requirement. 

Dr Mahak briefed the farmers about importance of pig breeding along with fattening. He further said that it is important to produce our own pork for safety and health of Naga people. Dr Mahak informed the farmers about importance of scientific pig farming and adopting the latest technologies like improved pig germplasm, breeding management and artificial insemination in pig. The importance of selection of good breed for pig farm was also highlighted. He further highlighted the importance of biosecurity measures to contain African swine fever disease in Nagaland. Farmers were trained on using different feed for different category of pigs.  

Dr H Kalita, Joint Director, ICAR Nagaland Centre informed the farmers to adopt scientific pig farming with full dedication. He further informed that Nagaland need approximately 12 to 15 lakh pigs, however, Nagaland has only four lakh pig population. Dr Kalita asked the farmers to cooperate with the ICAR and other government department for making Nagaland self sufficient. 

Dr Samuel, Extra Assistant Commissioner, Longleng acknowledged the ICAR Nagaland centre and KVK Longleng for its role in improving the livelihood of tribal farmers. He urged the farmers to adopt the ICAR Technologies for reaping the full benefit.

The 34 farmers from 14 villages of Longleng district were provided with 60 Rani piglets along with 60 bags of pig starter feed. The programme was implemented under Tribal Sub-Plan of ICAR RC for NEH Region, Umiam.
