
Dimapur, December 12 (MExN): ICAR has been working to transfer latest agriculture methods, disseminate techniques and organize regular workshops and seminars to educate farmers. In addition of his honest initiative, NEH Research Complex working under ICAR inaugurates 9th KVK at Longleng district of Nagaland. A press note issued to media stated that on the occasion Dr. SP Phom, Parliamentary Secretary, Dr. A K Singh, DDG- NRM, Dr. S V Ngachan, Director- NEH Research Complex and Dr. Chandan Rajkhowa, Director- NRC Mithun was present as chief guest.
Nagaland state has got 11 districts and it has 8 KVK already in state. The note stated that after this 9th KVK in Phom district ICAR will be able to provide all new techniques of agriculture in NEH region, research of scientists, innovative methods of farming in climate vulnerable areas. The new KVK will have 16 employees taking care of all updates & information from all across India. Climate change has been a big obstacle in crop cultivation in NEH region. Approximately 3.5 million hectares of land of NE has been under rain fed rice cultivation, which only 30% area of total cultivation and it is very less as per the population and demand.
On the occasion Dr. S V Ngachan, Director- NEH Research Complex said, “for us biggest challenge is to create agriculture opportunity in those areas which are under severe climate change effect. Here our target is to provide technology, new method of agriculture in adverse climate condition. Also, to organize workshops for farmers on innovative agriculture and farming techniques in floods, droughts and massive soil erosion condition.” He further added that today role of KVKs has changed. They are playing very important role in agriculture in remote areas of India rather that just coordinator. ICAR is initiating Climate resilient agriculture in NEH region in this case KVK will be helpful to convey techniques to farmers at their own place.
According to Dr. Chandan Rajkhowa, Director- NRC Mithun, Nagaland, “As per future prospects it is really good to have Longleng its own KVK. Since Mithun is prestigious animal of state and for many people this is the only source of livelihood, our association with KVK definitely going to be fruitful in the form of transferring the new technology of Mithun farming through artificial insemination for people of Longleng district.”
The note further mentioned that KVK will help to provide new technology, research and organizing capacity building program on the various methods to enhance resilience of Indian agriculture to climate change and climate vulnerability under National Initiative on Climate Resilient Agriculture. This is part of ICAR’s project to open KVK in all districts of country and provide all possible information to farmers related to agriculture. Most of the population of these districts are tribal and for them source of livelihood is extremely limited. In this case, KVK will work like boon for them in future.
