It plays a vital role in supporting and strengthening the rural economy by providing gainful employment, in fact Handloom and Textile stand next to agriculture as a source of income generation in rural areas. Manufacture of fine woolen textile products in India has been forte of artisan skills of handloom weaver’s right from Kashmir in the North to various manufacturing centers in Rajasthan, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh for centuries. Various kinds of animal hair obtained from hilly terrain were processed and used to make fine products like shawls, carpets, rugs etc. The Indian Wool Industry in this regard is an important industry since it is one of the prominent sources of livelihood for the rural India and it represents small, medium, and large scale units. North eastern region as such does not produce wool, but the demand of woolen products is huge due to the fact that North eastern part of India is comprised mainly of hilly states where the duration of winter last longer than comparatively other parts of the plain states of India. For example, in the states like Meghalaya, Nagaland (Kohima mainly), Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, winter last longer. So the ICC in association with CWDB is organizing Woolen Expo in the Northeast to meet the demand supply and promote wool and woolen products and encourage weavers and entrepreneurs’. She further requested the people of Nagaland to extend support to the woolen expo in Nagaland and visit the expo atleast once in 10days and spread the news across the state.
