Dimapur, September 12 (MExN): The International Human Rights Council (IHRC), Nagaland State Chapter, has condemned the reported assault and subsequent death of a 30-year-old man, Viloto, at Balijan along the Dimapur-Assam border on September 9.
In a statement issued by Akavi N Zhimomi, President, International Human Rights Council-Nagaland State, the organisation said it was shocked by reports that Viloto, who was reportedly an orphan, sustained serious injuries after being allegedly beaten and assaulted. He was subsequently admitted to the ICU of District Hospital, Dimapur, where he reportedly succumbed to his injuries.
The council said assaulting another person was a serious criminal offence and that an incident resulting in the death of a person was “even more grave”. It said no individual had the right to take the law into their own hands or use violence against another person.
The organisation expressed concern over the circumstances leading to Viloto's injuries and death and extended condolences to his relatives, friends and loved ones.
It appealed to the Assam and Nagaland Police to conduct a thorough, fair and impartial investigation, particularly into the circumstances and motive behind the alleged assault and the injuries that allegedly led to his death.
The council urged the authorities to examine all available evidence, including video footage from the surrounding area, eyewitness statements and other relevant material, to establish the facts and ensure that those found responsible were dealt with according to law.
“A person's life cannot be taken through violence with impunity,” the organisation said, adding that every human life was valuable irrespective of social or economic background.
It said the fact that Viloto was reportedly an orphan made the need for a proper investigation and justice all the more important.
The council called upon the authorities to ensure that justice was delivered in a transparent and timely manner and that the rights and dignity of the deceased were respected.
