Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton said that New Delhi has assured the Naga political dialogue will take place at a political level. Speaking to reporters at the Dimapur airport upon his return from New Delhi, on February 6, Patton said the Union Home Minister Amit Shah gave assurances that future talks would be conducted through a political setup, implying an elected representative from the Centre. While clarifying that the current Government of India representative AK Mishra will remain involved, he indicated that a representative with a Ministerial background is expected to facilitate the process moving forward.
The Deputy Chief Minister’s return followed the signing of a tripartite agreement concerning the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority (FNTA). The agreement involved the Government of India, Nagaland state government, and Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO). The pact was signed on February 5 in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and the ENPO delegation led by its President Chingmak Chang.
Patton said that an interim arrangement for the FNTA will be in place for a duration of one year. Elections for the territory are scheduled to occur once this interim period concludes and outstanding issues are resolved. He confirmed that the transfer of 46 administrative subjects to the new setup has been mutually agreed upon by the signatories. He added that the Nagaland unit of the BJP was “extremely happy” with the successful conclusion of the agreement.
