Shillong | December 12: The Khun Hyyniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) formally merged with the United Democratic Party (UDP) at a public gathering held in Shillong today. The official merger kick started with the official announcement to accommodate the KHNAM leaders in the various posts in the Central Executive Committee (CEC)
KHNAM president and sitting MLA Paul Lyngdoh has been appointed as as the working president and spokesman of the UDP. The others accommodated in the UDP included James Ban Basaiawmoit (MDC) and Latiplang Kharkongor (MDC) as secretaries, Reynold Kharkamni as Chief Youth organizer and Michael War,W.Bynnud,M Lapang,H Marwein and Dr P Toi as members of the central executive committee (CEC) of the UDP.
During the programme to welcome the KHNAM members into the UDP fold, the speeches of the speakers limited to the issue of defeating the Congress in the next state assembly elections. The speakers spoke at length on the division of the regional party votes while forgetting that they are subtly lambasting with the party that they are keeping warm with. The UDP, HSPDP and the disbanded KHNAM are part of the Mukul Sangma Congress led government in the state.
Speaking on the need to have a single regional party in the state, the UDP president and former Chief Minister Dr Donkupar Roy said, "We have tried in the past to bring together the regional forces and the polarization of the regional voters resulted in a debacle to all the anti- Congress forces.”
Calling upon the other regional parties to understand the polarization of regional parties, Roy asked the other regional political parties to take a fresh lead from KHNAM to rejuvenate the regional forces under a single entity and to defeat the Congress in the next assembly polls.
Leader of the dissolved KHNAM and the newly appointed Working president of the UDP Paul Lyngdoh told a gathering that the merger is a “political marriage” that will herald a new beginning in strengthening the regional forces. “We have experienced in the past where the regional parties worked as an alliance but failed to generate the right results”, stated Lyngdoh , “adding, “Unification is the best solution to achieve the target to defeat the Congress and to govern the state as per the aspiration of the people”.
