Longleng, June 29 (MExN): Expressing grave concern over the prolonged neglect of the Changtongya-Longleng two-lane road project, the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) of Longleng District, under the aegis of the Phom Peoples’ Council (PPC), have issued an ultimatum to the concerned authorities.

It cautioned of “compelling action” if the road is not restored and maintained within a week. The CSOs have also demanded an inspection report on the project’s progress and the causes of delay. The meeting was convened under the leadership of PPC, with the Media Cell of Phom Students’ Conference issuing the statement.

At a consultative meeting held on June 29 to review the district’s welfare and development, the CSOs highlighted the “immense hardship” faced by commuters due to the deteriorating condition of the road, which has severely impacted transportation, economic activities, and the overall growth trajectory of the district.

The PPC President, YB Angam Phom voiced serious concern over the “prolonged non-maintenance” of the said road. “The deteriorating condition of the road has caused immense hardship to commuters and has adversely affected transportation, economic activities, and the overall development of the district,” Phom stated.

The meeting emphasised the urgent need for the concerned authorities to take immediate and effective measures to restore and maintain the road within this week, ensuring the safety and convenience of the public. It collectively resolved to pursue the matter with the appropriate government departments and agencies until necessary action is taken in the larger interest of the people of Longleng District.

The CSOs noted that despite submitting several representations and holding multiple meetings with the concerned authorities, including the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), District Administration and executing company, no concrete action has been taken to address the numerous issues relating to the two-lane road construction project in the district.

In a firm directive, the CSOs have asked the authorities to submit a detailed inspection report on the present condition of the road and the status of construction work to the CSOs’ office within one week. The report must clearly explain the existing road condition, the reasons for the delay, and the proposed course of action for completion and maintenance, it stated.

The CSOs cautioned that failure to submit the report and initiate immediate corrective measures within the stipulated period would render the authorities “solely responsible” for any future course of action the CSOs may be compelled to undertake in the interest of the people of Longleng District.
