Manipur police with AR recover more arms

Manipur police in Churachandpur district on Tuesday recovered a cache of arms and ammunition in a joint operation with the Assam Rifles.
An official source said 13 weapons including one 9mm carbine, one 9mm pistol, five single barrel rifles, one tear gas gun, eight hand grenades, five Improvised mortars ammunition and other war like stores were recovered in the operation conducted in the general area of Khotuh village under Henglep police station.

The operation was conducted acting on specific intelligence regarding the presence of arms and ammunition in the area, police said. 

The recovered items have been handed over to Henglep police station for further investigations, the police added.

The police and with the central security forces have been conducting combing operations in the fringe and vulnerable areas across the violent affected districts of the state to recover illegal weapons in the possessions of the miscreants and those weapons, ammunition and explosives looted from the armouries of the police and security forces during the initial stage of the outbreak of the violence on May 3 last year.

A total of 5,669 different types of sophisticated arms and around 500,000 rounds of ammunition were looted from police stations and armouries by mobs and individuals.

Maximum number of arms and ammunition were looted in Imphal West, Imphal East and Churachandpur districts, according to the police report. The ethnic violence triggered on May 3 last year and has since left at least 200 people dead and 50,000 displaced.
