COVID-19 death tally rises to 24 as two more die

Manipur Social Welfare Minister Nemcha Kipgen tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, becoming the first among the ministers in the state to contract the virus.

“After getting symptoms of Coronavirus, I got myself tested and the report came back positive,” the minister posted on social media on Tuesday. She then requested all who have come in contact with her in the past few days to isolate themselves and get them tested at the earliest.

The minister is currently under home isolation at her official quarters in Imphal’s Lamphel. 

Meanwhile, the ICU ward and the operation theatre of a private hospital in Imphal have been sealed after three nurses and an attendant tested COVID-19 positive. The nurses were on duty at the ICU ward of the hospital, a source said. The nurses and the attendant were shifted to a COVID care centre in Imphal, the source added.

Meanwhile, two more persons who were also COVID-19 patients died in the past 24 hours. This update has put the COVID-19 related death cases in the state to 24.

Both the deceased women, aged 73 years and 41 years, died at RIMS hospital, said an official source in the state Health department.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 cases in Manipur rose to 5,444 on Tuesday as 82 fresh cases were detected during testing of 1,985 samples in the last 24 hours. Among the 82 fresh cases, eight are personnel of the Central security forces while 70 of the 74 cases are from among the general population with no significant travel history.
