Longleng town erupted in anger following a fatal alleged hit-and-run case on October 25. According to reports from Longleng, two youths were found dead on the Tuensang road, between Pongo village and Longleng town, on Friday morning. They were on a motorcycle and allegedly runover by a military truck, which was said to be part of a convoy heading towards Assam.
As told to The Morung Express by a Longleng resident, the two bodies were discovered by other commuters. Emotions boiled over later in the evening when a convoy of Assam Rifles vehicles passed through Longleng town reportedly headed for Tuensang.
The morning’s tragedy fresh, mobs reportedly began venting their anger at the AR convoy, targeting the vehicles. Witnessing the anger directed at them, the resident said that the AR personnel withdrew from their vehicles and took shelter in one of their camps nearby.
Video clips of the public reaction showed mobs damaging stationary trucks and engaging in stone-pelting. Atleast 5-6 trucks were targeted and reported damaged in the vandalism, which subsided by around 9:00 pm.
Other vehicles of the convoy, which passed through Longleng town, were also reportedly stopped at the Pongo junction and vandalised.
The Longleng police could not be reached for comment but credible sources said that additional police personnel were being rushed to Longleng to control the situation.
