Mizoram to host paragliding world cup next year

Mizoram is all set to host 'para-gliding accuracy world cup' and also 'grand festival' in central Mizoram’s Serchhip town.

 

The event will be held from February 10 to 16 next year, Mizoram Tourism minister, Robert Romawia told a press conference in Serchhip on Friday.

 

He said that about 130 of the "best" para-gliders and 20 officials from different parts of the world will take part at the event to be held in Serchhip’s  Dawngzawl.

 

Royte said that Mizoram will represent India during the competition.

 

He expressed hope that the event will  attract tourists across the country and the world, which in turn will change the course of tourism industry in an positive manner in the state.

 

According to Royte, the state Tourism department will also organise the 'grand festival' simultaneously with 'para-gliding world cup' which will be filled with entertainments and ethnic delights to expose Mizoram to the world.

 

He said that internationally renowned Paragliding World Cup Association had already sent technical experts several times to study the location at Serchhip and confirmed it as one of the best sites for para-gliding in terms of topography and wind speed.

 

Serchhip had successfully hosted Para-gliding pre World Cup event last year where 9 countries had participated.

 

Preparation for the event is gaining momentum, Royte said.

 

Royte, who also holds the sports portfolio  said that the state government would organise the third edition of state games after a hiatus of more than 30 years. The event is slated to be held from December  9 to 13 this year where about 15,120 players from the 40  MLA constituencies will compete in 32 sport disciplines, including 132 men’s events and 88 women’s events.

 

Royte said that the state government has allocated Rs 150 lakh for the purpose.
