Imphal | October 21 : Eighteen militant cadres of seven different underground organizations surrendered with a huge cache of arms and ammunitions before Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Sigh on Thursday. With this, 206 cadres belonging to various militant outfits in the state have laid down arms in IGAR (South) alone since April 2011.
In a surrender ceremony held at Headquarters IGAR (south) at Mantripukhri here today, the 11 cadres of KLNF, one each of UNLF, PLA, KCP, PRA, UPPK and two cadres of PREPAK laid down arms which included, four AK 56 Rifles, two AK 47 Rifles, six 9mm Pistols, three .32mm Pistols and each 7.65 mm Pistol, one Inch Mortar, M-Rifle, radio set and large amount of ammunitions and magazines.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister O Ibobi said there should not be any compromise on certain core developmental issues which touch the life of each and every individual though all communities and groups may pursue their legitimate aspirations.
peace and freedom from crime and terrorism are the catalysts for progress and development. He also congratulated the youth for having taken the brave and right d3cision to tread the path of peace.
Further elaborating on the occasion, the Chief Minister applauded the role of the Assam Rifles and State police in facilitating the home coming and rehabilitation process for the misguided youth.
He also assured that maximum efforts would be put in for proper rehabilitation of the cadres who have shunned the path of violence.
The Chief Minister stated that the struggle based on ethnic identities coupled with the problem of economic development has serious constraints in the state. The continued blockade on national Highways has created scarcity of essential commodities in the state persisting for last more than two months.
He further said that no government can succeed to bring about change without the support of the people. While all communities and groups may pursue their legitimate aspirations, there should not be any compromise on certain core developmental issues which touch the life of each and every individual, he added.
Manipur Director General of Police, Y Joykumar while speaking on the occasion also lauded Assam Rifles and Army for their efforts to bring peace and normalcy in the state.
Major General UK Gurung, YSM, IGAR (South) mentioned that more and more misled youth are being encouraged to abjure violence, lay down arms and join the mainstream. He also said that those who show courage and lay down arms require support from all sections of the society to reintegrate with the main stream and highlighted the need of for all section to extend support to them.
The peaceful surrender of these cadres with arms would definitely be a guiding beacon for other misled youth to follow the suit, paving way for peace and harmony in the state.
The IGAR (South) further reiterated the commitment of Assam Rifles for ushering in an era of peace and prosperity in Manipur.
