Kohima, May 29 (MExN): Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio today stressed the importance of meritocracy and also called for shifting focus from politics to economic development.

There are proven systems and formulae to build a progressive economy, he added, while inaugurating the Angami Gazetted Officers Krotho (AGOK) Badze Multi-Utility Centre in Meriema, Kohima on May 29.

He also cautioned against living beyond one's means. Highlighting the importance of meritocracy, Dr Rio mentioned the establishment of the Nagaland Public Service Commission (NPSC) and the Nagaland Staff Selection Board (NSSB).

Acknowledging the intense competition in these areas, he encouraged the Krotho to mentor and support young aspirants, as well as to promote skill development.

He also noted that the Centre has been established at a strategically significant location and expressed gratitude to the land donors and the pioneers of the Union for initiating the idea to construct it, stated a DIPR report received here.

To this end, CM Rio expressed hope that the Centre would be a blessing not only to the Angamis but also to all Naga tribes and others.

Stating that “privilege comes with responsibility,” he also stressed that when one tribe or person prospers, the benefits extend to everyone.

Dr Rio also pointed out that sports activities are no longer merely an extracurricular activity but a full-time career, with successful sportspersons gaining fame and financial stability in a short time.

He called for a change in mindset to reflect this evolving landscape.

He noted that the government takes cognisance when officers’ organisations provide guidance and urged the Krotho to serve as a think tank for the betterment of society.

Dr Rio reminded AGOK members that the current generation is reaping the blessings of their forefathers, who lived diligently, honestly, impartially, and with a broad-minded vision, and urged them to uphold the same values.

Delivering the welcome address, AGOK President Neilasa Sopfü shared that revenue generated from the Centre would be used to offer long-term soft loans to aspirants for coaching, skill development training, and for the maintenance of the AGOK Centre.

Er Kezhazelhou Theünuo, Convenor of AGOK Badze, presented a brief history of the Centre's construction. He informed that a management committee would be formed to oversee the operations of the Centre, which will be rented out for weddings, seminars, conferences, workshops, and other events. The Centre features an 800-seat hall, banquet hall, kitchen, guest rooms, bathrooms, and parking space for over 200 vehicles.

Former AGOK President Kevisiezolie Suohu and President of the Angami Public Organisation Thejao Vihienuo also addressed and encouraged the AGOK members, while the Southern Angami Cultural Society presented a cultural song.

A host of dignitaries, including Ministers, Advisors, and MLAs, attended the event, stated the DIPR report.
