Nagaland Forest Project organizes exposure trips for JFMCs, SHGs

Kohima Division under Nagaland Forest Management Project organised exposure trips for JFMC and SHG members to Wokha Division.

Kohima, May 30 (MExN): Kohima Division under Nagaland Forest Management Project went for exposure trips to Wokha Division, organised for JFMC and SHG members for Batch-I villages of Nsunyu, Tuophema and Zhadima ‘A’ on May 22 and 23, Batch-II villages of Terogvunyu, Seiyhama, Phenwhenyu and Kandinu on May 29 and 30 respectively.

A press release received here stated that a brief introductory session was held at the chamber of the ACF & ADMU Head, Rajiv Shankar IFS, Wokha Division, where he welcomed all the visiting team members and encouraged them to take away key learning from the host division.  

Following this, the team paid a visit to the Tssentsü Nature Outlet, where products made by the SHGs are displayed and sold. This outlet is an initiative of the Wokha Forest Division where SHGs products of the villages under NFMP and FBMP-KfW projects are promoted and the outlet also helps in market linkages, packaging and testing of nutritional value of the products. 

While interacting with Batch-I villages, Renjamo Odyuo, the JFMC Chairperson of New Riphyim under Doyang Beat shared on JFMC formation, where the village members conducted General Body Meeting with village council and project members. 

He highlighted that the concept of forestry intervention models were explained to them in detail, that the department guided them during the process of selection of JFMC members as well as providing insight into the Forestry Intervention Model areas undertaken in the village. He further shared that under NFMP, 159 ha have been covered in their village and that the creation of nursery and plantation of saplings in the sites has helped the community to earn in the form of wages. 

He highlighted that with the provision of Entry Point Activity (EPA), Water Harvesting Structure (WHS) and solar lights, it has been a huge asset to the village community.

During the interaction with the community members, Yhuntilo Kent, FMU head, Tseminyu said that, in the past, people depended so much on forest for so many activities leaving many areas overexploited and affecting the climate change. Stressing on the importance of Forestry Intervention and Livelihood Improvement of the SHGs under the project, the FMU Head emphasised that the project will ultimately result in increased forest coverage at the same time, it will uplift the status of women.   

Self Help Group Members from New Riphyim (Batch-I villages) under Doyang Beat, also shared their experiences. The visiting team members also visited the various Income Generation Activities of the SHGs members, WHS, EPA and JAF Model area of New Riphyim village and toured the Doyang area. 

Meanwhile for Batch-II villages, the JFMC members and the SHG members visited Yikhum Village (Batch-II village) under Doyang Beat. 
During the interaction, Longshithung Kithan, the JFMC chairperson of Yikhum village briefed the visiting members on JFMC formation, record keeping and various microplanning exercises. He also briefed about the creation of EPA and WHS that has been very beneficial for the community members. SHG members also shared on their various income generation activities. The visiting members also paid a visit to the Ekhumrhong, a Ministry towards Addiction & Substance Use Disorder, EPA, WHS and Doyang Reservoir.

The exposure trip culminated with sharing of experiences by the visiting team members.
