Kohima| December 3 : Minister for Health & Family Welfare Kuzholuzo Nienu today assured to tie- up with state’s social welfare department to create a separate Disability Commissioner to look after the differently abled people in the state.
Also responding to a representation submitted by ‘Enable,’ the minister also announced that the government will consider a case regarding a study on the status of disability in the other districts of the state as well. Mentionably, Enable has already conducted a study on the status of disability in Nagaland - Kohima and Phek districts which came into book form and the same was released by the minister today.
Speaking at the World Disability Day here at Naga Hospital, the minister said it is the duty of everyone to elevate the confidence of those who are differently abled so that they can also live a normal life.
He also thanked Enable team and all those involved adding “you have given them hope, elevated their confidence and gave them a reason to live again.” He was also appreciative that the fund provided to Enable by the government under Capacity Building was used judicially. “The government is ready to help any organizations who are doing genuine work to help the society,” Azo said.
Additional chief secretary & development commissioner Alemtemshi Jamir, IAS, while congratulating the Enable team for their good work encouraged the team to keep working to give awareness on the issue. “What Enable is doing is something very important because they are not only talking about it but also living with it”, said Jamir.
The development commissioner also said that there may be children with different disabilities but when we think deep, he said we normal people are also handicapped- mentally, emotionally and spiritually and commented that we have to think about how to handle the issue.
“We need to constantly think about the people who are differently abled and send a strong message to the rest of the masses”, he added. He also assured that disability issue will be a priority area in the 12th five years plan.
Enable chairperson Neikule Doulo said that Enable started with a few friends contributing Rs. 1000 monthly to organize programmes and seminars by bringing in world repute persons on disability to Nagaland to help in their commitment to campaign for disability. She also said that currently there are more than 10 schools in Kohima which are open to accepting Special children with more schools committing in the coming years.
She also informed that the “Study on the status of disability in Nagaland-covering Kohima and Phek District which is currently printed for mass distribution is a documentation which will throw new light into the problems associated with disability in Nagaland.
“Enable has been working on the book for the past two years and we hope that the books will provide policy makers, researchers and all involved in disability with a clearer picture of the ground realities,” Doulo said.
Nagaland Parents Association for the Disabled (NAPAD) president Marlong Longkumer also spoke on the occasion. Commissioner & Secretary for Health and Family Welfare, Menukhol John including several dignitaries were also present at the inaugural function. The inaugural function was followed by health Mela.
