DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 4 (MExN): National Open Karate-Do Championship organised by ISKF-Kanglei Shito Ryu Karate-Do Assocaition, Nagaland commenced Friday, November 4 at the indoor badmintion stadium (State Stadium), Dimapur. Held under the aegis of International Shito Ryu Karate-Do Federation, India Branch and approved by All India Karate-Do Federation (AIKF), a total of around 150 competitors from various parts of the country are taking part in the tournament. The competitors comprise of state teams from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Manipur, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Nagaland. According to tournament organisers, this is the first time Nagaland is organising and hosting a national level Shito Ryu Karate-Do championship.
The inaugural today was graced by Chuba Longkumer, BDO, Tening, Peren district, as the chief guest; with J Konyak, OC, West Police Station, Dimapur and Sensei Mutum Bankim Singh, all India chief instructor as guests of honour. Singh is a 5th Dan ISKF-USA, AIKF, WKF and AIKF referee and judge.
Addressing the inaugural, Longkumer while dwelling on the tenets of martial arts, maintained that it is not only a discipline for self-defence or about fighting, rather it goes much beyond. It is an art which encompasses honing a whole lot of skills and virtues concerned with the mind, body and soul. “It is an art to respect others, to communicate, to discipline oneself, to tolerate, to endure” and more importantly an art to maintain one’s mental equilibrium in the midst of violence, he said, while adding that martial arts has always been defensive and not offensive.
He thus, urged all the participants to ever remain committed and true to the understood principles and play in the spirit of sportsmanship. The chief guest also donated a sum of Rs. 30, 000 towards the tournament while guest of honour J. Konyak donated Rs. 10, 000. The tournament will conclude on November 5. Alemtemshi Jamir, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary & Development Commissioner will be gracing the closing ceremony as the chief guest; while ADC, Niuland Hotulu Swu will be the guest of honour.
