Traders directed to verify weights and measures within prescribed period
Kohima, September 15 (MExN): The Department of Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection, Government of Nagaland, has issued a notification directing all traders, dealers, retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers, packers and other persons engaged in trade and commerce in the state to strictly comply with the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, and other applicable legal metrology laws and rules with immediate effect.
All concerned traders and dealers have been directed to ensure that all weights, measures and instruments used for trade and commercial transactions are duly verified and stamped by the department within the prescribed period. They have also been directed not to use any unverified, unstamped, defective, unclean, or non-standard weighing or measuring instrument for any transaction or trade.
The notification further states that all transactions involving goods sold by weight, measure, or number shall be carried out using prescribed and standard units and duly verified instruments. All pre-packaged commodities shall comply with the mandatory declarations and requirements prescribed under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, including declarations relating to net quantity, MRP, name and address of manufacturer, packer, importer, and other applicable particulars.
Traders and dealers have also been directed to maintain and produce relevant licences, certificates, verification certificates, records, and documents as required under the applicable laws and rules. No trader or dealer shall engage in any practice resulting in short delivery, incorrect weighing or measurement, or otherwise contravening the provisions of the legal metrology laws.
The Legal Metrology Officers of the department shall conduct inspections and enforcement activities throughout the state to ensure compliance. Any violation detected during inspection shall be dealt with strictly in accordance with the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, and applicable Acts and Rules, including applicable penalties and proceedings.
All traders and dealers have been advised to ensure full compliance and cooperate with the Legal Metrology & Consumer Protection Department during inspection and enforcement activities.
