Nagaland: State-level nursing seminar focuses on ethical practice

Kohima, May 31 (MExN): State seminar on ‘Legal & Ethical Standards in Nursing Practice’ was organised by School of Nursing, Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) in collaboration with Kohima District Legal Services Authority (DLSA). It was held at Hotel Japfü, Kohima on May 30.

The seminar was conducted as part of a Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) initiative and brought together 77 Registered Nurses and from various institutions across the State, stated an update received here.

Sunjib Rana, Advocate and Retainer Lawyer, Kohima DLSA, delivered the opening session on legal issues in Nursing Practice, addressing critical areas such as patient consent, medical documentation, and malpractice laws.

This was followed by two comprehensive sessions on ethical issues in Nursing led by Nagali Shohe, Advocate and Panel Lawyer, Kohima DLSA. She highlighted the importance of ethical decision-making, respect for patient rights, and adherence to professional conduct.
In the afternoon session, I Imchen, Advocate, presented the Patient’s Bill of Rights, emphasizing patient autonomy, informed consent, and compassionate care as fundamental to Nursing Practice.

The seminar concluded with a key session on legal safeguards for Nurses, delivered by S Tiakala Longkumer, Principal, School of Nursing, NHAK. She offered practical strategies for Nurses to protect themselves from legal liabilities while maintaining high standards of professional accountability.

The event was ably moderated by Imnanaro and Dr Rachel Ao, and coordinated by Khoshelu K Khamo. Pre and post-assessment tests were conducted to evaluate participants’ learning, and positive feedback was shared during the closing remarks.
