National Press Day observed at Tamenglong & Shillong

Tamenglong observed the National Press Day organized by The Cham, a daily newspaper in Rongmei. As part of the celebration a photo exhibition, launching of Sepak- Takraw event in Tamenglong district and opening of the 6th edition of the DihCham Volleyball Tournament were held at Mini stadium Tamenglong HQs.
Joseph Pauline ED, DRDA Tamenglong, Dr. Chambo Gonmei District Tuberculosis Officer tamenglong and Kh. Doren Singh, president of All Manipur Sepak- Takraw association graced the program as Chief Guest, Guest of honor and President respectively and they inaugurated the photo exhibition stall, the Volleyball tournament and launched the Sepak- Takraw event respectively.
Joseph Pauline praised and encouraged the journalists. Dr Chambo also emphasized the need to have healthy awareness among the people especially the youths on media. Doren Singh, president of AMSTA assured all possible help in upbringing the emerging Sepak- Takraw in Tamenglong district.
In another similar occasion of National Press Day in Shillong, Ampareen Lyngdoh said a watchful and responsible media is imperative to make the government delivers system effectively and accountable.
If we have a sleeping media, we are bound to have a sleeping government," remarked Meghalaya Urban Affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh.
Lyngdoh while referring to this year’s theme, "Media, an instrument of public accountability," said a vigilant media is a must to make the people in power to strive for accountability.
Even as she alluded to the observations about India where there are too many policies and less of criticism or too many criticisms for positive policies, by and large she was appreciative to the role of the fourth estate in pushing ahead the democratic values of the state and the country.
“It is the media that is keeping us on our toes because they remind us (government) of our duties”, stated Lyngdoh,who is a former media person and qualified mass communication post graduate even as she added that it is because of the watchful media that we have a watchful government in the state.
Stating that a vigilant media can make the government correct its flaws, she was also lucid in urging the press to be accountable in order to make democracy more vibrant. Iterating her opinion on the role played by the fourth estate in the state, Lyngdoh appreciated the functioning of the journalists, saying, “So long they have not generated to a point where privacy of the people are invaded nor resorted to activities for commercial gains".
