National workshop on computational linguistics underway at NU- Lumami

Participants at the three-day National Workshop on Basic Hands-On Training in Computational Linguistics which got underway on November 17 at the Department of Linguistics, Nagaland University.

ZUNHEBOTO, NOVEMBER 18 (MExN): A three-day National Workshop on Basic Hands-On Training in Computational Linguistics began on Monday at the Department of Linguistics, Nagaland University, with participation from faculty members, research scholars, students and invited guests.

The inaugural session was chaired by Dr Arenkala Ao, Assistant Professor, Department of Linguistics. The programme opened with a welcome that acknowledged the presence of Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Venuh, Dean of the School of Humanities Prof Jano S. Liegise, resource person Dr Amalesh Gope and Head of Department Prof Pangersenla Walling.

In her address, the chair underlined the growing relevance of computational linguistics in the digital academic landscape and encouraged participants to fully engage in the training sessions.

Prof Pangersenla delivered the opening remarks, stressing the need to develop digital competencies in linguistic research. This was followed by a felicitation of resource person Dr Amalesh Gope for his contributions to the field.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Venuh offered greetings and shared insights on Naga languages, while a traditional folk song presented by Seyisenou added a cultural note to the programme.

Dean Prof Jano S. Liegise spoke on the importance of interdisciplinary learning and the evolving nature of linguistics in the digital age. Resource person Dr. Gope, in his address, highlighted the relevance of computational tools in contemporary linguistic research and urged participants to make full use of the hands-on sessions.

The inaugural programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Pinky Waikhom Devi of the Department of Linguistics.
