Maligaon, January 31 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has recorded significant progress in railway infrastructure development and safety enhancement during FY 2025-26 so far, with major improvements in track safety, passenger amenities and operational efficiency, officials said.

Passenger safety remained a key focus, with nine Road Over Bridges (ROBs) commissioned and eight Road Under Bridges (RUBs) completed, surpassing achievements during the corresponding period last year. In addition, 21 manned level crossings were eliminated to reduce accident-prone locations. Bridge safety was strengthened through regirdering of 12 bridges and provision of pathways on 77 bridges to facilitate safer inspection and maintenance.

Track renewal works saw substantial progress, with rail renewal covering 337.4 km and sleeper renewal spanning 329 km, both exceeding last year’s figures. Ballast renewal of 7.649 lakh cubic metres was carried out to improve track stability, while 16 permanent speed restrictions were removed to enhance punctuality and train mobility.

Passenger amenities were augmented with the opening of 13 foot over bridges and three high-level platforms for public use. Platform raising was completed at seven stations, along with construction of 18 platform sheds and extension of 10 platforms. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, works at Haibargaon station were completed.

Improvements were also made in turnout safety, with 197 turnout renewals, insertion of 180 thick web switches and 165 weldable CMS crossings. Nineteen defective layouts were corrected, while deep screening was carried out at 207 turnout locations.

Mechanised track maintenance achieved a milestone, with 10 PQRS portals recording a monthly progress of 48.15 km of CTR/TRS(P) works in December 2025, the highest ever for NFR. Cumulative mechanised progress reached 251 km up to December 2025, marking a 100 per cent increase over the corresponding period last year.

Revenue earnings of Rs 43 crore were generated through land utilisation and licensing of shops and sidings, reflecting an increase over the previous year. Speed enhancement on loop lines, raising speeds from 15 kmph to 30 kmph, was completed at 29 stations.

Officials said the achievements reflect NFR’s sustained focus on infrastructure augmentation, safety enhancement and passenger convenience, with continued emphasis on modernisation and capacity building across the region.
