NFR scales renewable energy drive with new rooftop solar installations

GUWAHATI, NOVEMBER18 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has expanded its renewable energy footprint with the installation of 11.95 MWp of rooftop solar capacity across its zone as of October 31. The installations, undertaken since 2011, cover key stations, offices, workshops and service buildings under the Katihar, Alipurduar, Rangiya, Lumding and Tinsukia divisions, as well as the NFR headquarters at Maligaon.

In a statement on Tuesday, NFR said that during the current financial year up to October, it installed 2.80 MWp of solar capacity at various important locations across the zone. The cumulative installations are generating an average of 8.98 lakh units of solar energy per month, leading to estimated savings of about Rs 66 lakh monthly.

The railway said works are underway to scale up total solar power generation capacity to 38 MWp across all five divisions, the headquarters and workshops. In addition, projects for another 1.73 MWp of solar capacity at the headquarters are in the finalisation stage. NFR said it remains committed to augmenting clean energy adoption through projects under both CAPEX and RESCO models. These initiatives, it added, will help reduce carbon emissions, enhance energy efficiency and support the development of an environmentally sustainable railway network in the Northeast.
