Kohima, September 1 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) staged a protest march in Kohima on September 1, condemning the registration of an FIR against Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi.
The protest was organised in compliance with a directive of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
Addressing the gathering, NPCC President and Lok Sabha MP S Supongmeren Jamir termed the FIR, filed following complaints by BJP workers, as “politically motivated” and alleged that it was an attempt to intimidate and silence the Opposition.
Jamir asserted that the Congress would not be intimidated by such actions and would continue to uphold democracy, justice and the constitutional right of the Opposition to question those in power.
He also expressed solidarity with Gandhi and AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, stating that attempts to suppress democratic dissent through legal or political pressure would be opposed through democratic means.
The protest also raised the demand for appropriate legal action against those responsible for the Haldwani incident in Uttarakhand, as highlighted in the AICC directive, informed a press rease from the NPCC.
Similar protest marches were organised by District Congress Committees in different parts of Nagaland, including Dimapur, Tuensang and Kiphire, with party leaders and workers participating, it added.
The NPCC said the Congress would continue to defend democratic values, constitutional rights and the freedom of the Opposition to raise issues concerning the people without fear or intimidation.
Meanwhile, the Mokokchung District Congress Committee, in a separate statement, demanded the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of what it termed the “fabricated FIR” against Gandhi.
It also urged citizens to stand firm in defending the values of fraternity, dignity and justice enshrined in the Constitution, while calling on authorities to address the reported FIR and related cases against voices advocating constitutional and social justice.
