DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 22 (MExN): Nagaland Rural Bank (NRB) has further spread its reach by opening a branch at Niuland. Before the opening of the branch, Niuland sub-division under Dimapur district was a previously ‘unbanked’ block.
The branch, located right in the middle of Niuland town, was formally inaugurated on Saturday, October 22 by the Additional Deputy Commissioner of the sub-division, Hotolu Swu. It is the ninth branch of the NRB in Nagaland.
While expressing his gratitude to the bank for opening the branch, Swu, in his address said that the NRB will always be remembered as the pioneers of banking services in Niuland sub-division. NRB is the first banking institution to open a branch in Niuland. The branch is currently providing its services from a one-roomed transaction section. Nevertheless, Swu commented: “Let us not look at the size of the branch right now, but (rather) concentrate on its potentiality and what it can contribute.”
AK Das, Assistant General Manager, SBI Regional Business Office, Dimapur, who also attended the inaugural, expressed his surprise in observing that Niuland was without a banking service, until now, inspite of it being surrounded by vast agricultural land with great economic potential. He added that the SBI will be putting its eyes on covering previously ‘unbanked’ blocks during the ongoing financial year. To open a bank branch, he said, is not an easy task and further it is a challenge to keep the branch up and running. However, he expressed optimism that the NRB will live up to the expectation of the people and succeed.
Speaking on behalf of the people of Niuland, Hoikhu Awomi, vice chairman of Niuland Ad-hoc Town Committee said the opening of the branch will not only benefit the economy of Niuland but also the bank itself. Stating the public of Niuland is behind the bank, and at the same time, Awomi urged the bank officials to work without any apprehension and to have patience.
Aside from various deposit schemes, the NRB extends farmer-friendly loans like Kisan Credit Cards, Agri. Term Loan, SHG-Credit Linkage and others like SME-Term Loan, SME-CC for Traders, General Credit Cards, Personal Loan (NRB Express) and Personal Car Loan. Its other activities include - formation and monitoring of Self Help Groups, formation and monitoring of Kisan Club (Farmers Club), banking awareness campaign through SHG-FC and issuing of Grameen Pay Order (GPO) in lieu of Demand Draft payable at SBI branches all over India.
