SENAPATI, DECEMBER 6 (MExN): The Naga Village Chiefs Federation, Manipur (NVCFM) has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the heritage and customary practices of the hill tribes in the backdrop of recent correspondence submitted to the President of India on traditional leadership structures.
The Federation acknowledged the ongoing discourse on governance in Manipur’s hill regions, noting that it draws upon various legislative frameworks enacted by the Centre and the State government. It said these frameworks, while intended to bring administrative uniformity, have also prompted reflection on the enduring relevance of ancient tribal customs that guided communities long before external systems came into place.
According to the NVCFM, the traditional chieftainship system remains a vital pillar of tribal cultural identity, rooted in principles of community harmony, sustainable resource management and equitable decision-making. The Federation said these customary practices, refined over centuries, continue to support social cohesion and have adapted to contemporary challenges. It called upon all stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue to ensure that any changes to governance structures respect the diversity and historical context of tribal traditions.
The Federation further stated that preserving customary institutions does not hinder national progress but complements it by promoting inclusive governance. In a press release issued by NVCFM president SA Ramnganing, the organisation said it is committed to working with government agencies and community bodies to explore approaches that honour both legal frameworks and indigenous heritage.
