In this present state where society seems to have gone beyong being merely modern, it is quite ironic that theories of the past seem to settle so well without us ever noticing it. Being one of the thousands on the hunt for a “respectable” job, I was set to thinking as to what I truly wanted. The never ending exams and interviews that would eventually land me in a ”well respected” position did not seem to bring about any satisfaction. On the contrary, it left me quite perplexed and questioning. Was it my drive? Or was it being steered by my parents, friends or was it something else altogether? Mind you, I would gracefully accept any well paying job now in my given position, but does it really put a blind-sheet to all my other aspirations?
In relation to this, I was reading a theory by Marcuse called the “ One Dimensional Man”. In it, Marcuse relates to the emerging development of modern industry which undermines the individual’s rationality to the increasing domination of the technical social apparatus. He was saying that Man’s options are limited by the society and his progess is directed by the society. To ignore it would mean expulsion from the societal interest, hence a one dimensional man born and brought up by a “One Dimensional Society”.
How far is the scenario true in our society though the excat nature may not be same. We are guided and taught along the same lines in our society. The usual pattern leads the 1st div to go for science while the others rest with the other streams. Is that the criteria on how achievements and talents are really classified? Or is it merely a trend of the society that has lingered on for long? The Problem is that we Nagas are quite contented the way we are and too rooted deeply in our society, that to expand thinking beyond the reach of society would leave us in an empty space. The point is many talents are simply wasted because no “Big –Time” risk takers can operate in this society of ours which is riddled with traditions and fears of being overwhelmed by something bigger and greater for us to comprehend as well as the Insurgent groups ever so existing. There are definitely some exceptions here and there but still the “one-dimensional society” is ever so present in every part of our lives whether we know it or not.
Our Naga society being a traditional one hardly ventures for a greater risk than what is necessary (except for the wrong ones). The whole deal that got me writing this article is that Nagas should embrace modernismm in a way that looks at a greater angle rather than the ones which satisfies its present needs. Talents are born and not created and the society should usher in ways where the young are given a chance to puruse it , no matter how unrewarding it may sound, rather than the ones dreamed by their parents and directed by the society.
