DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 22 (MExN): One person was arrested for trying to sell off a nine-month old infant for a sum of Rs. 4000 on the outskirts of Dimapur on October 21. The arrested was identified as one Gofor Ali, a 54 year-old working at one of the brick kilns at Khushiabill.
Ali was arrested and the baby taken from his custody following a complaint received from Tokugha village council, under Kuhuboto sub-division on the night of Thursday. The baby was reportedly abandoned by her biological parents, who were said to be also brick kiln workers, a few months back. The parents were identified as Aizun Haque and Aklima Khatun.
According to Ali’s statement, the baby and the mother were first abandoned by the father, disclosed, Women Cell, Dimapur. The father reportedly had a lot of pending debts. In the father’s absence, the mother and the baby were staying at Ali’s home. Months past with no news of the father and thus, it was decided that Ali will marry the mother. Just when everything was agreed and only the marriage was awaited, the mother also disappeared leaving behind the baby. Ali, who is already married with children, had no option but to sell off the baby. He started looking for prospective buyers (parents), while word spread and he was subsequently arrested by the police. The baby was handed over to the care of Wondang-Ki Charitable Foundation, Dimapur in consultation with Childline.
One held for attempted rape of minor
A twenty-four old, identified as Somesh, residing at Rail Bazaar, was arrested for a failed rape attempt on a twelve year-old girl. The incident occurred on the night of October 21. According to Women Cell, Somesh, a driver by profession, broke into the girl’s room after everyone was asleep. The girl, who was sleeping with her younger sibling, however managed to raise an alarm waking her parents and the neighbours as well. He was caught and handed over to police.
