Organisations condemn sexual assault on minor in Phek

KOHIMA, JULY 2 (MExN): The Phek Town Council (PTC) and the Chakhesang Students' Union (CSU) have strongly condemned the alleged sexual assault of a minor in Phek district and called for a thorough investigation and speedy prosecution under the relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other applicable laws.

In separate statements issued on July 2, both organisations described the incident as a "heinous" crime and reiterated that there should be "zero tolerance" for offences against children.

The PTC referred to the case reported by Phek Police on June 30 and condemned what it termed a "barbaric act" against a child. It also appreciated the police for their prompt response in apprehending the accused and initiating legal proceedings.

The council urged the investigating authorities to carry out a "thorough, impartial, and expeditious investigation" and ensure that the accused is prosecuted "to the fullest extent of the law" under the POCSO Act and other relevant legal provisions.

The PTC appealed to the public to respect the child's privacy and dignity by refraining from sharing any information that could reveal the victim's identity. It further called on parents, schools, churches, community organisations, civil society and citizens to work together to create a safe environment for children.

The CSU also condemned the alleged assault in the strongest terms, describing it as a "barbaric and inhuman act" that must be dealt with under the strictest provisions of the law.

The union expressed concern over what it described as the rising incidence of child sexual abuse in Phek district, stating that such incidents require immediate and uncompromising intervention by the authorities.

It demanded that the accused be investigated and prosecuted under the POCSO Act, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and other applicable laws without delay. The CSU also called for a "fair, impartial, and time-bound investigation," protection of the survivor and witnesses, strict confidentiality of the survivor's identity, and an investigation free from external interference.

The union stated that it would closely monitor the investigation and judicial process to ensure there is no delay or interference.

Expressing solidarity with the survivor and the family, the CSU appealed to the public to report incidents of child abuse, sexual exploitation or violence against minors to the nearest law enforcement agency, stating that "silence protects perpetrators; timely reporting and collective action protects our children." It reaffirmed its commitment to combating all forms of violence against children and ensuring that every child can live in safety and dignity.
