Peinaci Kereu is 28th Zeliang wrestling champ 2026

Wrestlers in action at 28th Senior & 1st Under 15 Naga Traditional Wrestling Championship 2026 of ZWA at Jalukie on February 27.

Peinaci Kereu today emerged the champion of the 28th Wrestling Meet 2026 of Zeliang Wrestling Association (ZWA), held at Jalukie town.

Winning the coveted champion title in senior category, Kereu pocketed a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh.

Nlumrai Hegwang stood second position and received Rs 60,000.

Indupeu Kereu and David Nsanglung bagged the 3rd and 4th position and awarded with Rs. 40,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.

In 1st Under 15 category, Ciculung Iralu emerged the champion title and received Rs. 10,000.

Haireuci stood second position and awarded with Rs. 6000.

Peilungningteibo and Kerangteibo bagged the 3rd and 4th position and pocketed Rs 4000 and Rs 2000 respectively.

Altogether, 48 wrestlers vied for coveted champion title in senior category and 10 wrestlers for Under 15 category.

‘Naga style wrestling is becoming increasingly popular’
Gracing the event as the special guest, Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang said that Naga style wrestling is becoming increasingly popular, not only amongst the Nagas but also beyond.

He said that Naga style wrestling reflects our rich culture, strength and warrior spirits.

“As more people take interest, we can see how our heritage continues to grow and gain recognition,” he said.

He also stated that it is the responsibility of the Naga people to preserve, promote and proudly carry forward the Naga style wrestling for future generations.

He expressed his appreciation to Nagaland Wrestling Association for offering huge cash prize for the winner. He said that such initiative will further attract the young people to participate and make Naga wrestling popular.

He also said that wrestling is not only about physical power, it is about courage, respect and determination. He said every athlete standing have represents hard work, sacrifice, and fighting spirits of the people.

Hiazu Meru, Deputy Commissioner Peren graced the closing ceremony as the guest of honour.

The prize sponsors for the meet included; Er Swarai Meru, Chief Engineer PWD (R&B), Government of Nagaland, Lungriading Nsarangbe, IPS (Retd),  Heiyilung Nsarange, Deputy Commandant CRPF 173 Battalion, Kiengau Nda, Retd BDO & president NPF Peren Division and Ada Nsanglung.

Earlier, ZWA President Kengim Ilunglung delivered presidential address while ZWA Technical Secretary Asam Teilia administered oath to the wrestlers.

ZWA Vice President Itingngau chaired the inaugural programme while ZWA General Secretary Perangteilu proposed vote of thanks.

The tournament was officiated by referees from Nagaland Wrestling Referee Board.

The meet was organized by ZWA in collaboration with 9th Assam Rifles, Jalukie and managed by Mpai Welfare Society.
